Contrary to assertions that the    North is unproductive,    Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has said that the north does not depend on federal allocation to survive, saying rather the country depends on the North for survival.

Briefing newsmen in Kano yesterday, the governor noted that the country relies on the agricultural productivity of the North, adding that the efforts and labour of the North were used to build what is called Nigeria today.

“If you refer back to history of the country, the country used to depend on the North for services. Even the oil you’re talking about, it was explored by our own efforts,” Wamakko stated.

He expressed that the North was still bent on the same efforts to build a better Nigeria. Wamakko said the Northern governors met and resolved that they would think and act in line with the policy of building a 21st century Nigeria, where everybody was productive, relevant and resourceful.

On reliance on oil revenue, he said: “In our Governors’ Forum and National Economic Council Meeting, we all know well that we cannot continue to rely on oil because it’s unreliable.”

He said the governors were trying their best to diversify revenue sources through improving agriculture and other areas of the economy.

He said states had the moral obligation to empower citizens as best as they could, saying whatever came to them was meant for the people.

He said they were striving to see that their citizens were empowered.

1. improving agriculture ke!
I'm from the northern city of kano, and from the rudimentary business skills we learned as children, we know that as long as N280 galoon of petrol from filling station sold by the road side will gain N120 profit instantly while a similar investment in agriculture will not yield even half of that amount in six month, then GOVT has to do more than provide fertilizer once in a year and make a hell of noise about it. the only way out is for the GOVT to establish farms and employ workers and experts, with produce MARKETING BOARD to demonstrate to all our business men and women that AGRICULTURE actually pays as much as OIL and also HOLDING A POLITICAL OFFICE. WHILE THIS WILL DEFINITELY WORK IF EXECUTED UNDER 'ZERO TOLERANCE TO CORRUPTION', otherwise improving agriculture in the NORTH will remain illusive for generations to come.
