Employers who engage corps members for their service year have been informed to treat corps members urged to them well and engage them in meaningful activities to help energise their fresh ideas into making sustainable impact on the socio-economic development of FCT.
The call was made yesterday by the NYSC FCT Governing Board Chairperson, Mrs. Blessing Onyeche Onuh, during the official closing ceremony of the 2010 Batch ‘B’ Orientation course in Abuja.
She also called on the corps members to strive to make positive impact in the lives of their host communities.
“Your predecessors have achieved successes in the area of community development. Some of them were involved in construction of toilets, classroom blocks, health centres as well as enlightenment campaigns on HIV/AIDS and drug abuse. I therefore urge you to follow their footsteps,” she said.
In her address, FCT NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Amugo Linda, cautioned the corps members against unauthorized travelling and advised them to always be security conscious, citing the rampant cases of kidnapping.
“Therefore, do not engage in activities that may jeopardize your security and do not go out alone at night or ungodly hours,” she warned.
The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir, noted that the corps members’ service was needed not only in Abuja metropolis but more in the rural communities of the territory.
He said that the government as part of its reform programme, is seriously championing poverty reduction through wealth creation, while calling on the corps members to explore the path of self employment since the white collar jobs are increasingly becoming few.
“I urge you to accept the challenges and go into all the nooks and crannies of the FCT; to every school, health centres and organizations where your services are needed and make the required difference.  I also expect that you will be in the fore front of the campaign against all social ills in our society. I also urge you to carry the campaign against HIV/AIDS to all nooks and crannies of the FCT,”  said the minister.
