An 18-year-old iron bender yesterday told an Abuja Magistrate’s Court that he stole wristwatches in order to get money to rent an apartment for his new bride.
Jemilu Suleiman of Utako village, Abuja, said he sold the wristwatches and used the money that accrued from the sale to rent a place in Kano for his new wife.
Prosecutor Abdul Alhassan told the court that on July 26, one Ibrahim Mohammed reported to the police that while he was sleeping at Salahudeen’s house, the accused stole his box containing wristwatches, valued at N25,000 and N5,000.
He said during police investigations, the accused confessed to the theft, offence punishable under Section 288 of the Penal Code.
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.
Following his guilty plea, the prosecutor prayed the court to try the accused summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Magistrate Rosemary Kanyip convicted and sentenced him to six months imprisonment without fine option.
