A civil war veteran and community leader, Mr Rasheed Adesokan, has assured Nigerians of the continued unity of the country irrespective of differences or agitations by different sections.

Adesokan told newsmen in Ibadan yesterday that “Every segment of the country has learnt big lessons from the three-year (1967-1970) civil war that threatened the unity and corporate existence of the country.’’ Adesokan, who is also a community leader in Ibadan, said the guardians of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would not allow any situation that could lead to breaking the country to happen.

“There are people who we regard as guardians of the Federal Republic, people who guard the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but anybody can just say anything including politicians. But when it gets to a level where some people’s insolence can no longer be tolerated, people who regard themselves as the guardians of the Federal Republic will call them to order. Nobody can play with the indivisibility of Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nobody can say where the direction is heading to,’’ he said. Adesokan added: “Those who think that they have monopoly of violence and think they can break the country should have a rethink.’’ Adesokan was speaking against the backdrop of online reports credited to agitating youths from a section of the country threatening to renew “Oil War” if their kinsman is not allowed to contest in the 2011 elections.

The veteran said: “Anybody can say anything including politicians, but to think that Nigeria will disintegrate will be out of it because those who fought to keep the country one are still alive. People will continually have disagreements but nothing will divide this country. We had that in 1967 and ended it in 1970 and no one, not anybody can do that again.” He commended the Nigerian military for its loyalty to the political leadership in the country, stressing that “The military should be credited for fighting to keep the country intact.” (NAN)
